About This Place

Big Bad Johns is a quintessential Victoria bar that perfectly blends rustic charm with lively local spirit. Nestled discreetly within the historic Strathcona Hotel at 919 Douglas Street, this spot has the feel of an old mine or woodshed retreat, offering a cozy yet energetic vibe that instantly invites you to kick back and relax. The ambiance alone transports you to a different time, where rough-hewn wood, nostalgic decor, and the hum of friendly conversation make for an irresistible hangout.

What truly sets Big Bad Johns apart is its dedication to being a genuine “dirt bar” — a no-frills, unpretentious hotspot where the emphasis is on excellent, affordable drinks and good company. Customers consistently praise its lively atmosphere and welcoming environment. As Teri Quinn joyfully notes, the staff are incredibly friendly and accessible, making you feel like part of the local scene from the moment you walk through the door. The bar’s reputation for reasonable prices, arguably the lowest in the city, makes it a magnet for both locals and travelers seeking authentic Victoria nightlife without breaking the bank.

The complimentary basket of monkey nuts (peanuts) adds a quirky and charming touch to the experience, creating a tactile connection between the space and its patrons—even if eating with the shells scattered on the floor might be a bit unusual to some, it’s all part of the down-to-earth character that Big Bad Johns embraces. And speaking of snacks, their simple yet satisfying menu highlights like mozzarella cheese sticks with sauce are perfect comfort bites to complement your beer selection, enhancing the laid-back vibe.

Many guests recall memorable evenings filled with lively banter, laughter, and easy camaraderie. Khushboo Abhani sums it up succinctly: it’s an amazing place to hang out and share a few brews with friends. That authentic, just-like-home feeling is hard to come by, but Big Bad Johns nails it with its approachable and spirited environment.

True, occasional rough patches in service have been noted, as Michele Devlin mentions an unfortunate incident involving a staff member, showing that while the place thrives on its warm community feel, it’s by no means perfect. But these moments don’t overshadow the overall charm and the overwhelmingly positive vibe that makes patrons want to return again and again.

The bar’s distinctive decor, including the curious display of hanging bras, adds a playful and slightly cheeky edge to your visit—these personal touches stir curiosity and conversation, making Big Bad Johns not just a place for drinks, but a venue teeming with character and stories.

Whether you’re seeking a relaxed night with strong, reasonably priced drinks, or a lively spot to meet locals and swap stories, Big Bad Johns delivers a refreshingly genuine bar experience in Victoria’s downtown core. Don’t be surprised if you find your night turning into an unexpectedly fun and memorable occasion here.

Had a nice time at this bar, loved the old mine/woodshed ambiance. It's a good dirt bar for cheap drinks. Built into the Strathcona hotel so it's easy to miss from the street.

Great fun, lively local, staff were really friendly and welcoming and the locals too. Had great craic chatting at the bar. Very reasonable, cheapest bar we ever came across on our trip, they take cash & card. It’s clean but looks different from pictures. I loved it and would highly recommend. We had a great night.

My wife and I only came in for a couple of drinks. I had 2 double rum and cokes, she had 2 singles. I forgot to ask what the dark rum was, cos it was very nice. Prices were very reasonable. We got a basket of complimentary monkey nuts, and weirdly, all the casings just go on the floor. I found it strange that there were a lot of bra's hanging up everywhere. I'd imagine this place is very lively at the weekend. We still enjoyed ourselves though. No stars for food as we did not eat here.

Went twice. Fun atmosphere, great service for the most part. Didn’t eat there, except for the peanuts. Lower stars because—A frustrated staff member barged on through a crowd of us, we had just arrived and making our way to the back of the place, hurt my hip and hurt the shoulder of a friend. That was 4 days ago—my hip still hurts.
